Our Leather Repair Process
Step 1
Assessment & Preparation
We start each project by conducting a thorough check of your leather. This helps us spot any damage, wear, or discolouration. Next, we clean the surface well. This removes dirt, oils, and old finishes. It helps our restoration products bond effectively and provides results that endure.
Step 2
Repair &
Reconditioning
Cracks, scratches, and holes are expertly filled and smoothed using flexible leather compounds. At this stage, we can also rehydrate the leather. This helps to keep it soft and prevents future damage.
Step 3
Re-Colouring & Restoration
We then use custom-matched dyes or pigments to re-colour the leather. This blends well with the original tone, or we can change it to a new shade if you like. Craftsmen use many layers for depth, richness, and long-lasting durability.
Step 4
Protection &
Finishing
Finally, we use a protective topcoat. It seals in colour, boosts durability, and shields against daily wear. We can also add conditioning treatments. This keeps your leather soft, supple, and looking fresh.

Common Problems Clients have When They ask me to repair their leather
How I Deal With Sticky Tacky Leather
This is pretty common, particularly if you have kids. It is often caused by a combination of sugary drinks, food spills, and other sticky residues.
I typically begin by deep cleaning the leather using products such as Colourlock Strong Leather Cleaner and specialist solvent-based cleaners.
I then prepare the surface using a solvent-based prep solution, abrasive pads, and fine sanding pads—generally 600 grit, although in some cases a much more aggressive grit may be required.
This process removes the sticky topcoat, excess colour transfer, and old wax residues. Once completed, the leather is left with a smooth, non-sticky surface and a beautiful matt finish, although the appearance may be slightly patchy at this stage.
To complete the restoration process, I apply colour using multiple thin coats, followed by a protective finish that is sprayed onto the surface.
The final step is simply to allow the finish to cure and dry properly, resulting in a durable, natural-looking finish that restores both the appearance and feel of the leather.

Fixing Leather Grain That Has Lost Its Texture
When the grain texture has been rubbed away, the leather can become flattened, smooth, and worn-looking, leaving it lacking the natural character and appearance it once had.
This is most commonly caused by wear, friction, and, in some cases, over-cleaning. Areas that receive the most use—such as headrests, bolsters, armrests, and seat cushions—are constantly subjected to abrasion from clothing, body movement, and everyday use. Over time, this gradually wears down the leather’s protective finish and natural grain pattern.
Fortunately, this can often be repaired. The first step is to assess the extent of the damage and ensure any rough edges, loose finish, or uneven areas are properly prepared using professional-grade abrasives, including 600–1500 grit sanding pads and grey Scotch-Brite pads. This creates a smooth, stable surface for the restoration process.
After preparation, the grain effect can be recreated using professional leather restoration techniques. This typically involves applying specialist products such as Colourlock Fluid Leather, LTT Flexifil, or other flexible leather repair compounds to rebuild worn areas of the leather. Once the surface has been restored, grain transfer papers, custom texture moulds, and heat-transfer embossing systems are used to replicate the original leather pattern and blend the repair seamlessly into the surrounding area.
This process helps restore the leather’s natural texture, improve its appearance, and strengthen the repaired area before colour and protective finishes are applied.
When Leather Has Gone Shiny
This is probably the most common issue you’ll come across with older leather. What was once a sophisticated, stylish matt finish now more closely resembles a black bin liner. This happens because years of exposure to head oils, sweat, body oils, and product build-up gradually alter the appearance of the leather’s protective finish.
The first thing I do is thoroughly clean the affected areas using Leather Master Strong Cleaner. This product delivers excellent results when it comes to removing body oils, sweat residue, dirt, and old product build-up that have accumulated over time.
Once the surface is clean, I prepare the leather using a solvent-based preparation solution, abrasive pads, and, in most cases, a 600-grit sanding pad. This process helps remove any remaining contamination, smooths the surface, and creates a stable foundation for the restoration work that follows.
For colour and finish balancing, I use Uniters Leather Colourants, which I have always found to provide outstanding colour accuracy, durability, and a natural-looking finish. In most cases, I then apply a protective topcoat, building it up with multiple thin coats until the desired matt or satin finish is achieved.
The result is a cleaner, more natural-looking surface with the excessive shine removed, restoring the leather’s original character and making it much easier to maintain going forward.
